  • 1900 Francis Bannerman purchased Pollepel Island
    – 6.5-acre island in the Hudson River
    – 50 miles north of New York City
  • 1920 Bannerman’s Island black-powder house explodes
  • 1967  the family sold Bannerman island to New York State
    – surplus warehouse was abandoned
  • 1969 Bannerman’s Island Castle warehouse burns down
  • Today the Bannerman Castle Trust preserves the castle & island

  • 1865 founded his own company, Francis Bannerman Co., at the age of 14
  • 1872 met and married his wife, Helen Boyce
    – they had three sons; Francis Vll , David Boyce , Walter
  • 1900 purchased Polopel Island
    – small island located in the Hudson River just north of West Point, NY
  • Died Nov 26, 1918 (@ 67)
  • 1918 two sons, Frank Jr. and David Boyce ran the business and changed its name to Francis Bannerman Sons
