K9 Veterans Day (1942)

March 13, 1942 is the official birthday of the United States K9 Corps
National K9 Veterans Day is celebrated on March 13th on the official birthday of the US Army K9 Corps, which was formed in 1942.

  • DOGS FOR DEFENSE – acquired and trained dogs for the U.S. Military
    – 100 dogs were procured by DFD and an ad hoc training program was initiated
    – more than 1,800 dog teams would patrolled the coastlines
    –  assigned 3,174 dogs to the Coast Guard alone
  • March 13, 1942 official start date of the US Army K9 Corps
  • 1987 Joseph White, began a movement to establish March 13th as K9 Veterans Day
  • 2009 – K9 Veterans Day was created by Joe White
  • October 24, 2009 – Joe White died
  • 2010 New Jersey st state to officially recognize K9 Veterans Day holiday
  • 2014 Virginia recognized K9 Veterans Day
  • Florida, West Virginia, Michigan &  11 additional states (still looking for the whole list) also Recognize K9 Veterans Day officially

K9 Veterans Day

Joe White was Vietnam War veteran, K9 handler and trainer who lived in Jacksonville, Florida. Since his death, his wife continues the effort to get recognition for K9 Veterans Day as a national holiday.

  • Sgt. Stubby, the original war dog
    – American Pit Bull Terrier
    – Found as a stray on the Yale campus in 1917
    – WWI 102nd Infantry, Connecticut
    – in French trenches for 18 months
    – participated in 17 battles
    – he met Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and Warren G. Harding
    – 1921 General John J. Pershing presented a gold medal from the Humane Education Society
    – Stubby died in 1926
  • Chips, the most decorated dog in World War II
  • Cairo, the Navy SEAL working dog on the bin Laden raid

Fur missiles have been used since at least 600 B.C.

Fighters, couriers, sentries, prison guards, scouts, rat catchers and morale boosters

during the Civil War, a Confederate spy who suspected she would be searched hid documents in a false coat of fur on her dog

The first airborne dogs jumped into combat on D-Day
